Professional Oral Hygiene

Professional oral hygiene is just as important as daily dental care at home. Patients often underestimate the importance of oral hygiene, although it is not only part of prevention but also of treatment.

With proper dental care, many dental and gum diseases can be prevented. The main cause of gum inflammation is the accumulation of bacterial plaque on teeth. Untreated inflammation can progress to periodontitis and even lead to tooth loss.

Professional oral hygiene helps remove plaque that accumulates over time even with diligent home care. In some patients plaque accumulates more intensively, in others more slowly.

The following factors contribute to this:

  • Improper dietary habits (sugary drinks, crisps, caramels, biscuits)
  • Tartar
  • Fillings with overhanging edges
  • Incorrect bite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Smoking

Why is professional oral hygiene so important?

The aim of professional oral hygiene is to remove soft and hard dental plaque using special methods.

During the procedure:

  • Soft plaque and tartar are removed above and below the gumline
  • Tooth surfaces are polished
  • Old fillings with overhanging edges are adjusted
  • Pigment stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine or smoking are removed

During the visit, with the patient's consent, we also remind you how to properly care for your teeth at home and how to look after removable and fixed dental prosthetics.

Professional oral hygiene is performed by

Dental Hygienist Asta Varanavice

The main goal of dental hygienist Asta Varanavice is to ensure your teeth remain healthy throughout your life. This is achieved by combining proper daily home care and professional oral hygiene at the clinic.

Diligent oral cavity care is the primary preventive measure

It is recommended to brush teeth twice a day, in the morning and evening after meals, after first cleaning the spaces between teeth with dental floss. Brushing more frequently is not advisable as it can damage tooth enamel and gums. After eating, it is sufficient to rinse your mouth.

Teeth are brushed with a toothbrush and toothpaste. It is advisable to use pastes with low abrasive particles, enriched with therapeutic substances: plant extracts, antiseptics, fluorides, mineral substances. These substances act antibacterially, reduce inflammation and pain, improve tissue nutrition, and reduce plaque and tartar formation.

However, there are places in the oral cavity where plaque accumulates but cannot be reached with a brush and dental floss. In such places, special devices or professional dental hygiene tools are needed.

It is very important to teach children oral hygiene from an early age, developing proper habits and ensuring healthy teeth for life.

This is a procedure during which soft and hard plaque (tartar), pigment stains and bacterial deposits are removed that cannot be removed with just a toothbrush or dental floss at home.

Even with diligent brushing, some areas remain hard to reach, especially between teeth and the gum margin. Plaque accumulates there and over time turns into tartar and can cause:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Periodontal diseases
  • Tooth mobility

Professional oral hygiene helps prevent this.

It is most often recommended to perform the procedure every 6 months.

However, if you have implants, prosthetics, orthodontic appliances or suffer from periodontal diseases, professional oral hygiene may need to be performed more frequently (every 3-4 months).

The procedure is painless. If gums are sensitive or inflamed, mild discomfort may be felt. If needed, local anaesthesia can be applied.

The procedure usually takes about 45-60 minutes.

If the amount of plaque is greater or more comprehensive periodontal care is required, a longer appointment or several visits may be scheduled.

Absolutely.

Implants and prosthetics require special care, as plaque also accumulates around them. Regular oral hygiene helps prevent peri-implantitis and ensures longer service life of restorations.

Oral hygiene is a therapeutic and preventive procedure designed for plaque and tartar removal.

Whitening is an aesthetic procedure that changes the natural tooth colour.

Whitening is often recommended only after professional oral hygiene.
