What is aesthetic prosthetics?

Aesthetic prosthetics is a long-term method of restoring dental aesthetics and function, applied when aesthetic fillings or whitening do not allow the desired result to be achieved.

Restorations are made of metal-free ceramics (porcelain), which are characterised by natural appearance, colour stability and longevity. This allows precise restoration of tooth shape, colour and proportions, ensuring the highest level of aesthetics and durability.

Types of aesthetic prosthetics

Crowns

Porcelain crowns restore the entire external part of the tooth up to gum level. They are recommended when:

  • Tooth decay has damaged the majority of the tooth
  • The tooth is severely weakened after trauma
  • Advanced enamel erosion is present
  • Discoloured or previously restored teeth need to be masked

Onlays and inlays

These are laboratory-made ceramic restorations that restore the precise tooth anatomy.

They are recommended for large fillings, especially after root canal treatment. This is a more conservative alternative to crowns.

Veneers

Veneers are extremely thin (0.3-0.5 mm) porcelain plates attached to the front surface of the tooth. They are recommended for:

  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • Discoloured or tetracycline-stained teeth
  • Closing interdental spaces
  • Shape correction

Porcelain veneers

These are extremely thin, aesthetic and durable ceramic restorations that allow natural restoration of tooth shape, colour and smile harmony. They are chosen for these properties:

  • Do not change colour
  • Do not lose gloss
  • Excellent biocompatibility

Zirconia ceramic

The zirconia framework is manufactured using CAD/CAM technology and hardened at 1500°C. We recommend it to those who value:

  • High strength
  • Excellent fit
  • Lower secondary cavity risk
  • No black gum margin
  • Suitable for both front and molar teeth

IPS e.max ceramic

Lithium disilicate ceramic, characterised by excellent aesthetics and strength. This ceramic is popular among patients who value extremely high aesthetics:

  • Do not change colour
  • Does not absorb pigments
  • Does not require periodic polishing
  • Ideal for front tooth restorations

Layered ceramic

The most naturally looking type of aesthetic restorations.

The thinnest veneers can be 0.2-0.3 mm thick, preserving the maximum amount of natural tooth tissue. In terms of strength it is slightly below zirconia and IPS e.max, but aesthetics are of the highest level.

Longevity and care

The longevity of aesthetic prosthetics depends on several key factors, such as the patient's oral hygiene, bite, habits and regular care. High-quality ceramic restorations can last 10-15 years and longer, maintaining their colour, gloss and shape. Unlike composites, ceramics do not absorb pigments and do not change their aesthetic properties over time.

To ensure longevity, diligent daily oral hygiene is essential, including brushing, flossing or irrigating, as well as regular preventive dental visits. It is recommended to avoid biting hard objects and harmful habits that could damage restorations. With proper care, aesthetic prosthetics remain stable, functional and aesthetic for many years.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We answer the most commonly asked questions from patients.

Aesthetic prosthetics is recommended when teeth are severely damaged, have lost a large portion of their tissue or have lost their function. It is also applied when there is significant colour change that cannot be corrected by whitening or filling. Often this treatment is also chosen when there are significant bite or tooth wear changes. Prosthetics allow restoration of not only aesthetics but also correct chewing function. The decision is always made individually after assessing the patient's condition and expectations.

The main difference is longevity and materials. Aesthetic filling is performed directly in the dentist's office using composite materials, which may require renewal after some time. Prosthetics are laboratory-made ceramic restorations that are more durable and retain their colour for longer. The choice between them depends on the extent of tooth damage and the patient's goals.

Yes, old, unaesthetic or non-functional restorations can be replaced with new ceramic ones. This allows not only improving aesthetics but also restoring correct dental function. Often such changes significantly improve the overall smile appearance. Comprehensive diagnostics and planning are performed beforehand. The goal is to achieve a long-lasting and harmonious result.

The selection of suitable materials for aesthetic prosthetics always depends on the individual clinical situation, patient expectations and functional needs. Different materials, such as porcelain, IPS e.max or zirconia ceramic, have different aesthetic and mechanical properties. For example, in the front tooth area, priority is usually given to aesthetics and translucency, so extremely natural-looking materials are chosen.

The most important thing is not the material itself but its proper selection for the specific situation. Therefore, before treatment we carry out a comprehensive analysis and clearly explain all possible solutions, their advantages and longevity. This way the patient can make an informed decision that best meets their needs.
