Root Canal Treatment

If caries-damaged dentin is left untreated, microorganisms and their toxins reach the dental pulp and cause inflammation.

Pulp inflammation may manifest with these symptoms:

  • Spontaneous, throbbing, paroxysmal pain
  • More severe pain at night
  • Pain from hot or cold stimuli
  • Pain when chewing
  • Tooth sensitivity to touch

However, it is important to know - there may be no obvious symptoms. Sometimes inflammation develops silently, without severe pain, but the infection spreads to the surrounding tissues.

When inflammation reaches the pulp tissue, irreversible changes begin. An untreated infection can spread beyond the root apex and damage the alveolar bone, causing an abscess or chronic inflammation.

What is endodontic treatment?

Endodontic treatment (root canal treatment) is a procedure used to treat the infected or damaged inner part of a tooth, known as the pulp.

When caries reaches the inside of the tooth, bacteria cause inflammation or necrosis of the pulp.

During the procedure:

  • The root canals are cleaned and disinfected.
  • The root canals are carefully shaped and prepared.
  • The root canals are securely sealed with a specialized filling material.

Modern root canal treatment is performed using:

  • Under local anesthesia
  • Using magnification technology (a dental microscope or magnifying loupes)
  • Using mechanical and ultrasonic instruments
  • With follow-up X-ray examinations

Precise cleaning and airtight sealing of the root canals are essential for achieving long-lasting results and protecting the tooth from reinfection.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We answer the most commonly asked questions from patients.

After root canal treatment, the tooth is no longer vital because its nerve has been removed. However, when properly restored with a filling, inlay/onlay, or dental crown, it can function for many years. It is important to know that endodontically treated teeth often become more brittle, so additional restoration with a dental crown is frequently recommended to protect the tooth from fracture.

No. Treatment is performed under local anesthesia, so the procedure is painless.

The duration depends on the tooth condition and canal complexity. Often 1-2 visits are sufficient.
