Teeth Whitening

A white and beautiful smile is an aesthetic change that gives self-confidence. You will agree that white teeth encourage smiling more, and such a change positively affects social relationships.

One of the simplest ways to beautify your smile is teeth whitening. This is an extremely popular, safe and tooth-friendly aesthetic dentistry procedure. Teeth whitening is fast, relatively inexpensive and painless.

Causes of tooth colour change

External factors:

  • Dental plaque. Although usually almost invisible, it can darken due to chromogenic bacteria.
  • Tartar. Over time, soft plaque calcifies, especially at the neck of teeth near the gumline. Colour can vary from yellowish to brownish-black.
  • Smoking.
  • Staining foods and drinks: cola, coffee, tea, wine.
  • Certain medications.
  • Chlorhexidine (contained in mouthwash) binds with tannins in coffee, wine and tea and accumulates on the tooth surface.

Internal factors:

  • Tooth decay
  • Dental trauma
  • Enamel hypoplasia
  • Fluorosis
  • Tetracycline use
  • Patient's age

Teeth whitening materials used

Teeth whitening product components are as follows:

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Carbamide peroxide (a milder form of hydrogen peroxide)

These materials are completely safe for teeth and effective when used correctly.

Both materials decompose into oxygen, water and peroxide compounds. Oxygen molecules break down stain particles in the enamel and dentine into smaller, nearly transparent molecules. An oxidation process takes place. Teeth look whiter and brighter because they reflect light more intensely.

Teeth whitening with trays at home

One of the most popular, safest and most convenient teeth whitening methods, recommended by our clinic. This method allows achieving a long-lasting and naturally looking result using individual whitening trays made specifically for the patient's teeth.

When deciding on this whitening method:

  • Individual whitening trays are made.
  • A whitening gel is selected.
  • The patient is taught how to perform the procedure at home.

Whitening process at home:

  • Brush teeth with toothpaste before whitening.
  • Inject a matchhead-sized amount of whitening gel into each tray indent.
  • Place the trays on the teeth.
  • Wear overnight or for the time specified by the dentist.
  • After the procedure, brush teeth, rinse the trays with warm water and dry them.

The recommended course of at-home whitening is up to 10 treatment sessions.

It is normal for your teeth to become slightly more sensitive during the whitening process. However, if they become very sensitive, you can take a 1–2 day break before continuing the treatment.

Laser teeth whitening

This is one of the fastest and most effective ways to restore a white, radiant smile. Laser teeth whitening is performed at the clinic and allows achieving a visible result in just one visit, making it an ideal choice for those who want a quick and dramatic change.

During the procedure, a high-concentration whitening gel is used and the laser acts as an activator, enhancing its effect and ensuring an even, intense whitening result.

After the procedure, increased tooth sensitivity may occur for 1-2 days. This is a normal and temporary reaction that passes quickly.

Whitening process at the clinic:

  • Before the procedure, the condition of teeth and gums is assessed.

  • Gums and soft tissues are protected with special measures.

  • Professional whitening gel is applied to teeth.

  • The gel is activated by laser, enhancing its effect.

  • The procedure is repeated in several cycles, depending on the desired result.

  • After the procedure, the gel is removed and the achieved result is evaluated.

  • If needed, sensitivity-reducing procedures are performed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We answer the most commonly asked questions from patients.

  • Increased tooth sensitivity.

  • Acid-caused erosions.

  • Gum recession, inflammation, periodontal diseases.

  • Many restorations, filled front teeth.

  • Tooth decay, wedge-shaped defects.

  • For pregnant and breastfeeding women.

  • For children under 16 years, as the pulp chamber (tooth nerve) is larger and wider, and whitening materials can irritate and cause long-term pulp sensitivity.

  • For persons with fillings, crowns or veneers. Whitening materials do not change the colour of fillings, crowns or other restorations, they only work on natural tooth tissues.

  • Old, leaking fillings. Whitening material can enter the tooth pulp and cause inflammation.

  • When teeth whitening expectations are unrealistic. When an unnaturally white shade is sought and whitening is done too intensively, tooth tissues and gums can be damaged.

  • When there are many dark, bluish-grey or even blackish-brown stains caused by certain medications.

  • Increased tooth sensitivity
The most common side effect. Sensitivity can be reduced by shortening whitening time and using sensitivity-reducing pastes or gels containing potassium nitrate and fluoride. This is a temporary condition that passes within a few days.

  • Temporary gum sensitivity
Gum sensitivity is usually short-lived and occurs if the gel accidentally contacts soft tissues.

  • Uneven result
After whitening, sometimes uneven tooth colour occurs, but over time (within a few days to two weeks) the colour usually evens out.

  • Return of original colour
Most commonly occurs after intensive clinic whitening (e.g. within 1 hour). This is a natural process that can be prevented with proper aftercare.

  • Over-whitening
When whitening teeth too intensively and in a short period of time, they can become over-whitened, appearing unnaturally white or even transparent. Therefore, it is important to follow the recommended procedures and the dentist's guidelines.
